HPE Cray GX5000 and AI Factory Get NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72, Quantum-X800 InfiniBand, and New Blackwell Options

April 15, 2026
HPE has announced enhancements to its NVIDIA AI Computing by HPE portfolio, engineered to support large-scale AI factories and next-generation supercomputers. These offerings integrate compute, GPUs, networking, liquid cooling, software, and professional services into end-to-end full-stack solutions, specifically designed to meet the demands of at-scale and sovereign IT environments. Notably, NVIDIA AI technologies are now fully integrated into HPE’s exascale supercomputing platform, with leading organizations—including Argonne National Laboratory, HLRS, Hudson River Trading, and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information—already adopting HPE’s NVIDIA-powered AI infrastructure to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and industrial innovation.

HPE Cray Discovery

HPE is extending NVIDIA’s advanced technologies to its second-generation exascale-class platform, the HPE Cray Supercomputing GX5000—a unified architecture that merges AI and HPC capabilities into a single system. Research laboratories, sovereign entities, and enterprises are increasingly combining AI models with traditional HPC simulations, and HPE has positioned this platform to address these converging workload requirements effectively.

A new addition to the lineup is an HPE compute blade built around NVIDIA Vera CPUs. Each liquid-cooled HPE Cray Supercomputing GX240 Compute blade can accommodate up to 16 NVIDIA Vera CPUs, while a full rack supports as many as 40 blades—delivering a total of 640 CPUs and 56,320 Arm-compatible cores. The GX240 is tailored for high-density, high-performance AI compute deployments that demand consistent, sustained throughput.

HPE is also expanding networking options for large-scale systems by adding support for NVIDIA Quantum-X800 InfiniBand. These switches feature 144 ports operating at 800 Gb/s and incorporate power-efficiency enhancements—critical considerations for exascale computing environments where energy consumption and operational efficiency are paramount.

Trish Damkroger, Senior Vice President and General Manager of HPC and AI Infrastructure Solutions at HPE, noted that HPE’s expertise in exascale supercomputing is shaping its approach to integrating advanced AI workloads with traditional HPC systems. She emphasized that the ongoing collaboration between HPE and NVIDIA enables customers to achieve higher performance density, driving progress across key fields such as medicine, life sciences, engineering, and manufacturing.

Enhancements to HPE AI Factory for At-Scale and Sovereign Deployments

Beyond its supercomputing offerings, HPE is expanding the HPE AI Factory to cater to service providers, sovereign governments, and large enterprises adopting the NVIDIA Vera Rubin and NVIDIA Blackwell platforms. This expansion addresses the growing need for scalable, secure AI infrastructure that aligns with sovereign data governance and at-scale deployment requirements.

The centerpiece of this expansion is the next-generation NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 by HPE. Built to handle frontier-scale AI models with over one trillion parameters, this rack-scale system is optimized for high-efficiency deployments in neo-cloud environments. It includes 36 NVIDIA Vera CPUs, 72 NVIDIA Rubin GPUs, sixth-generation NVIDIA NVLink scale-up networking, NVIDIA ConnectX-9 SuperNICs, and NVIDIA BlueField-4 DPUs. HPE integrates its advanced liquid cooling technologies and data center design services with the platform to streamline large-scale rollouts and ensure optimal performance.

HPE is also introducing the HPE Compute XD700, an OCP-inspired system built on the NVIDIA HGX Rubin NVL8 platform. Designed for dense AI training and inference workloads, the XD700 supports up to 128 Rubin GPUs per rack—doubling the GPU density of the previous generation while targeting reductions in space, power consumption, and cooling requirements.

Additionally, HPE is broadening access to NVIDIA Blackwell technologies by making the NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPU available across the entire HPE AI Factory portfolio, ensuring consistent performance and compatibility across deployments.

Software and Services Updates for Faster AI Deployment

HPE’s updates extend to the software and services stack that underpins large-scale AI factories, with a focus on accelerating deployment and simplifying management. The HPE AI Factory portfolio is now endorsed under the NVIDIA Cloud Partner program, which streamlines the NVIDIA Cloud Provider certification process for cloud operators. This enables faster validation cycles and easier integration for service providers building multi-tenant AI environments, aligning with HPE’s focus on simplifying cloud-native AI operations.

HPE is also expanding multi-tenancy capabilities by supporting virtual machine GPU passthrough and secure Kubernetes namespaces through NVIDIA Multi-Instance GPU (MIG) technology. These features are enabled via integration with SUSE Virtualization and SUSE Rancher Prime, giving providers the flexibility to choose between strict and flexible tenancy models to meet diverse customer needs.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift remain fully supported as part of Red Hat AI Enterprise, integrating seamlessly with NVIDIA AI Enterprise software for customers standardizing on enterprise Linux environments.

Both HPE AI Factory at scale and HPE AI Factory sovereign will integrate NVIDIA Mission Control software, which provides a unified operational layer for AI factories. This layer streamlines orchestration through NVIDIA Run:ai and adds monitoring and autonomous recovery capabilities from NVIDIA Dynamo, simplifying management and enhancing operational consistency for platform teams overseeing large AI clusters.

NVIDIA Mission Control Dashboard

Chris Marriott, Vice President of Enterprise Platforms at NVIDIA, emphasized that robust infrastructure is foundational to AI development. He highlighted the joint engineering efforts between HPE and NVIDIA in accelerated computing, advanced networking, and liquid cooling—all working together to deliver faster insights in large-scale and sovereign AI deployments.

Availability

NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs are available now within the HPE AI Factory portfolio. Integration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift with NVIDIA technologies is also available today.

HPE AI Factory multi-tenancy and GPU passthrough capabilities are scheduled for availability in Spring 2026. Support for NVIDIA Mission Control in HPE AI Factory at scale and sovereign deployments is planned for later in 2026, while the NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 by HPE rack-scale system will be available in December 2026.

The HPE Compute XD700 is set to launch in early 2027. Additionally, the HPE Cray Supercomputing GX240 Compute blade—featuring up to 16 NVIDIA Vera CPUs—and NVIDIA Quantum-X800 InfiniBand networking for the HPE Cray Supercomputing GX5000 will also become available in 2027.
